Katyayani Puja for Marriage: Vidhi, Mantra and How the Jaap Havan Works
By DevPravas Editorial Team · · 2 min read
Maa Katyayani is traditionally worshipped by those hoping for a timely and harmonious marriage. She is the sixth form of Navadurga, worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri. This guide explains the tradition, the mantra, the vidhi, and how a Katyayani jaap havan is performed.
Who is Maa Katyayani?
Katyayani is a form of Durga, known as the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. She is the sixth of the nine Navadurga forms. In tradition she is also associated with marriage: the Bhagavata Purana describes the gopis of Vraja worshipping Katyayani for a suitable husband, and this is the basis for the practice that continues today.
Katyayani mantra
The mantra most commonly used for marriage prayers, drawn from the Bhagavata Purana, is:
Katyayani Mahamaye Mahayogin-yadhishwari, Nanda-gopa-sutam devi patim me kuru te namah.
Pronunciation matters in Sanskrit recitation, so many people ask a priest to chant it for them, or learn it from a teacher or recording.
Katyayani puja vidhi
Customs differ by family and region. The usual outline is:
- Sankalp. State your name, gotra and intention.
- Devi puja. Place an image or idol of Maa Katyayani, and offer flowers, incense, a diya and naivedya. Yellow flowers and turmeric are often used.
- Mantra jaap. Chant the Katyayani mantra a chosen number of times on a mala.
- Havan. A concluding havan with poornahuti is offered, in a jaap havan.
- Aarti and prayer. The puja ends with aarti and a prayer for the intention.
Many people observe a vrat (fast) and choose a date such as during Navratri, following their family tradition.
What is a Katyayani jaap havan?
A jaap havan combines mantra jaap with a fire ritual. The pandit chants the Katyayani mantra a set number of times in your name and then offers a havan. Families choose it when they want the jaap done fully and correctly, or when the person the prayer is for cannot be present.
Who books Katyayani puja?
It is most often booked by or for unmarried people, and by parents seeking a suitable match for a son or daughter. It is a matter of faith. No priest can promise a match or a date, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Decisions about marriage remain a family matter.
