How the Puja Vidhi Works

  1. 1

Share the ancestor's name, gotra and tithi (or approximate date) of passing at booking

  2. 2

Priest confirms the correct tithi for the Shraadh as per the Hindu calendar

  3. 3

Sankalp is taken at the ghats, naming the ancestor(s) the rite is performed for

  4. 4

Tarpan and pind daan are offered with rice, til (sesame) and holy water

  5. 5

Closing prayers are offered, seeking peace for the departed soul(s)

Dress Code

  • White or other muted, unpatterned clothing is traditional for Shraadh; avoid bright or festive colours
  • Avoid new clothes for this puja; simple, freshly washed attire is preferred
  • Leather items (belts, wallets, footwear) should be avoided near any accompanying ritual at home
  • Women may wear a plain white or light-coloured saree or salwar kameez if joining along

Rules & Guidelines

Before the Puja

  • Confirm the ancestor's correct tithi with our team before booking, especially if the exact date is uncertain
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food, alcohol, tobacco, and if possible garlic/onion, from the previous evening
  • Bathe and dress simply in white or light colours before the live stream
  • Avoid haircuts, shaving or purchasing new items on the day of the Shraadh, per tradition

During the Puja

  • Join 10 minutes early; remain seated quietly through the sankalp and tarpan
  • Maintain a respectful, low-key demeanour; this is a solemn rite, not a festive one
  • Avoid loud conversation, laughter or phone calls during the ceremony
  • Offer a silent prayer or remembrance of the ancestor during the closing prayers

After the Puja

  • Distribute the prasad among family members, ideally to elders first, within the week
  • Feeding a Brahmin, cow or crow on the same day is a traditional continuation of the rite, if you're able
  • Avoid celebratory events or auspicious ceremonies on the day of the Shraadh itself
  • Keep the recording and receipt as a family record of the year's rite
