Laghu Rudra Puja: Vidhi, Samagri and Cost Explained

By DevPravas Editorial Team · · 3 min read

Laghu Rudra is one of the most commonly requested Shiva rituals after a simple Rudrabhishek. If you have seen it called Laghu Rudrabhishek, Laghu Rudri or Laghu Rudra path, it is the same ritual. This guide explains what it is, how it is performed, what samagri is traditionally used, and what it costs.

What is Laghu Rudra puja?

"Laghu" means small. Laghu Rudra is the shorter form of the larger Rudra rituals (Maha Rudra and Ati Rudra), which run to thousands of recitations. In Laghu Rudra, the Rudri (Sri Rudram) is chanted 11 times in each of 11 rounds, which makes 121 avartans, while the Shiva Lingam is bathed in a continuous abhishek.

Because 121 avartans take time, the ritual is usually done by a group of pandits chanting together, not by one priest alone.

Why do families book it?

Families traditionally book Laghu Rudra for health, protection, peace at home, and relief from planetary or health-related doshas. It is also done on important occasions such as a new venture, a family milestone, or a thanksgiving. As with any ritual, it is a matter of faith and tradition, and nobody can promise a specific outcome. If you are unsure whether it suits your situation, ask your family priest.

Laghu Rudra puja vidhi, step by step

The order below is the usual sequence. Your pandit may add or reorder steps according to local custom.

  1. Sankalp. The pandit states your name, gotra and intention (manokamna) aloud.
  2. Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana. The ritual begins with Ganesh invocation and the setting up of the kalash.
  3. Abhishek begins. The Shiva Lingam is bathed with water, then Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar), and Ganga jal.
  4. Rudri chanting. The group chants Sri Rudram in 11 rounds of 11 recitations, 121 avartans in total. The abhishek continues alongside.
  5. Shringar. The Lingam is adorned with bilva patra, vibhuti and chandan.
  6. Aarti and closing blessing. The ritual ends with aarti and a blessing.

Laghu Rudra puja samagri

For a ritual done at a temple, the pandits arrange the materials. If you perform it at home, the traditional list includes:

  • Water and Ganga jal
  • Milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar for Panchamrit
  • Bilva patra (bel leaves)
  • White flowers, chandan and vibhuti
  • Rice (akshat), roli and mauli
  • Incense, a diya and camphor
  • Fruits and a naivedya offering

A full 121-avartan recitation at home is difficult without a group of trained priests, which is why many families book it through a temple or an online service.

How much does Laghu Rudra puja cost?

At DevPravas, Laghu Rudra starts at ₹11,500 per sankalp, with live viewing included. That covers a pandit group chanting the 121 avartans, the continuous abhishek, a certificate with the pandit's name and date, and an Aashirwad prasad box. Live-stream and conference-call options cost a little more. Every price is listed on our pricing page.

Prices elsewhere vary with the number of pandits, the temple and the date. When you compare, ask how many pandits chant, whether all 121 avartans are completed, and whether you can watch it live.
