Diwali 2026: The Five Days Explained for Every Generation

By DevPravas Editorial Team · · 8 min read

Ask a grandmother what Diwali means and she will probably start with a smell: mustard oil in a kadhai, besan roasting for laddoos two days before anyone is allowed to eat them. Ask her eight-year-old grandson and he will say fireworks, new clothes and no school. Ask his mother, standing between them in a kitchen in Amritsar or a kitchen in Edmonton, and her answer will be more complicated: honouring what her mother taught her while building something her son will remember with warmth rather than obligation. With Diwali 2026 five days explained in one place, all three answers fit.

In 2026 the main Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, November 8. The full festival opens with Dhanteras on Friday, November 6. Most people could name two or three of the five days if pressed. Here is what all five mean, and why this year's dates need a second look.

Diwali 2026 Five Days Explained at a Glance

Day Festival India (Delhi) North America (New York)
1 Dhanteras Fri Nov 6 Fri Nov 6
2 Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali Sat Nov 7* Sat Nov 7
3 Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) Sun Nov 8 Sun Nov 8
4 Govardhan Puja Tue Nov 10 Mon Nov 9
5 Bhai Dooj Wed Nov 11 Tue Nov 10

*Choti Diwali is widely marked on November 7. In South Indian households that observe Naraka Chaturdashi with the pre-dawn oil bath (Tamil Deepavali), Drik Panchang's Delhi calendar places it on the morning of November 8.

The India column has a gap on Monday, November 9. That is not a missing festival. The lunar tithis do not line up neatly with sunrise this year: Amavasya continues into the morning of November 9, and Govardhan Puja is kept when Pratipada is current at sunrise, which in India is November 10. In New York the timing works out a day earlier. It is a good example of why families should confirm dates for their own city.

Day 1: Dhanteras 2026 (November 6)

Dhanteras opens the festival, and its best-known custom, buying gold, silver or at least a small new steel or brass utensil, often gets reduced to "the shopping day". That undersells it. The day honours Dhanvantari, the physician-deity of health and Ayurveda, alongside Goddess Lakshmi and Kubera. Buying something metal is a gesture of welcoming prosperity into the home. Jewellers simply built a successful business around a ritual instinct centuries older than they are. In many homes the evening also includes the Yama Deepam, a lamp lit facing south to ward off untimely death, a quieter thread inside what looks like a festive shopping day.

Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali (November 7)

Choti Diwali, "little Diwali", commemorates Krishna's defeat of the demon Narakasura, who had imprisoned thousands until Krishna ended his reign. It is a story about tyranny ending, easy to lose under the day's domestic character: deep cleaning, rangoli sketched out, and the serious cooking for the main night beginning. Many regions also mark it with an early-morning oil bath, abhyang snan, considered cleansing before the festival's peak.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja, the Main Day (November 8)

This is the day most people mean when they say "Diwali". Homes are cleaned and lit, with every windowsill, doorway and step lined with diyas, to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, who is said to visit homes that are clean, bright and open to her. The puja happens in the evening, in the Pradosh Kaal after sunset, and invokes Lakshmi alongside Ganesha, with Saraswati and Kubera included in some families.

In Amritsar the evening carries a second meaning. For Sikhs it is Bandi Chhor Divas, marking Guru Hargobind's release from imprisonment, and the Golden Temple glows with lamps reflected in the sarovar. It is a reminder that "the festival of lights" has always been lit by more than one story.

Day 4: Govardhan Puja 2026 (November 10 in India, November 9 in North America)

Govardhan Puja recalls Krishna lifting Govardhan hill on one finger to shelter the people of Vraj from Indra's storms, a lesson that devotion and community matter more than fear. Many households prepare a great spread of vegetarian dishes, heaped as a symbolic mountain, known as Annakut, "a mountain of food". Some temples offer the full chhappan bhog of 56 items. In Gujarat and parts of western India the same day is also the new year, and in Maharashtra it is Bali Pratipada. For Govardhan Puja 2026, check whether your local calendar follows the Delhi date or the North American one.

Day 5: Bhai Dooj 2026 (November 11 in India, November 10 in North America)

Bhai Dooj closes the festival and honours the bond between brothers and sisters. It is similar in spirit to Raksha Bandhan but has its own ritual: a sister applies tilak on her brother's forehead and prays for his long life, and he gives her a gift in return. For siblings split across continents it is often the hardest day to schedule. Picture a sister in Edmonton and a brother in Amritsar. In November, Edmonton is twelve and a half hours behind India, and this year even the date differs: Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on November 11 in India and November 10 in North American listings. A morning tilak in Amritsar is the previous evening in Alberta, so the video call has to be planned, not improvised.

The Thread Running Through All Five Days

Look at the five days together and a pattern appears that is easy to miss when you only celebrate the middle one. Dhanteras welcomes prosperity in. Choti Diwali clears out what came before: the cleaning, the demon defeated, the slate wiped. The main night is the pivot, light overtaking dark. Govardhan Puja is gratitude and shelter. Bhai Dooj closes on relationship, the reminder that none of it means much without the people beside you.

Welcome, clearing, transformation, gratitude, connection. Whether a family keeps all five with equal weight or, like most modern households, focuses on the third, the shape still holds.

Ghar Baithe Puja Kaise Karayein (How to Get a Puja Done From Home)

A question families ask every Diwali, in India and abroad, is ghar baithe puja kaise karayein: how do you get a puja done properly from home? Some invite a local priest to the house. Others book a puja performed live at a temple in India, with their name and gotra in the sankalp, such as a Satyanarayan Katha narrated in Hindi or English, or a Chadhava offering with prasad shipped home. Both are valid. The full range is on our pujas page, and our NRI page explains how a live ceremony fits around any of the five days.

FAQ: The Five Days of Diwali

What are the five days of Diwali in 2026?

With Diwali 2026 five days explained simply: Dhanteras on November 6, Choti Diwali on November 7, Lakshmi Puja on November 8, then Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj on November 10 and 11 in India, or November 9 and 10 in North America. Our Hindu festival calendar 2026 lists the whole season.

Why isn't Govardhan Puja the day after Diwali in India this year?

Govardhan Puja is kept when Pratipada is current at sunrise. In 2026 Amavasya runs into the morning of November 9 in India, so Drik Panchang's Delhi calendar places Govardhan Puja on November 10. In New York the tithis fall a day earlier. Families abroad should check their own city, as our NRI page explains.

What should you buy on Dhanteras?

Traditionally something metal: gold, silver, or a new steel, brass or copper utensil, as a sign of welcoming prosperity. Many families also buy a broom, associated with sweeping away poverty, or a new diya. The purchase is symbolic, not a spending target. For a puja on the day, see the options on our pujas page.

What is the difference between Choti Diwali and Diwali?

Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi) comes the day before and centres on Krishna's defeat of Narakasura, cleaning and preparation. The main Diwali night is when the home is fully lit and Lakshmi Puja takes place. Diwali 2026 Date, Muhurat, and Lakshmi Puja Timing covers the evening muhurat.

Can Bhai Dooj be celebrated over a video call?

Yes, and many families do. The sister performs the aarti and prays for her brother on camera, and he applies the tilak himself or has someone at home do it. Sending sweets or a rakhi-style thread in advance helps. On devpravas.in, you can also arrange a puja in your sibling's name through book.html.

Do you have to observe all five days?

No. Most families today anchor on Lakshmi Puja and mark the other days more lightly, depending on work, school and circumstance. The festival has always adapted to real life. 30 Days Out: An NRI's Diwali 2026 Planning Guide shows how families abroad fit the days around busy weeks.
